Smart Plastics
From waste to intelligent products

“Smart Plastics – From waste to intelligent products” is a project that aims to contribute to the development of recycled polymer-based products, such as filament for fused filament fabrication, products produced by injection molding, compression molding or extrusion, with enhanced properties due to the incorporation of nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes, graphene or metal oxides. The development of customized printing techniques that allow, for example, to obtain objects capable of changing their shape after printing (4D printing) are also being investigates.

The project runs in the Smart Plastics Lab of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Center for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA) – University of Aveiro (Portugal).

The laboratory is equipped with a set of equipment and infrastructures such as has plastic granulators, mixers, extruders, injection machines and ovens for the processing of thermoplastics by compression molding or rotational molding. There is also infrastructure for the accurate materials characterization.

Several MSc dissertations and other indicators were already developed within this project.
